The first U.S. mission to bring samples from an asteroid back to Earth is the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer, or OSIRIS-REx. OSIRIS-REx seeks answers to the questions that are central to the human experience: Where did we come from? What is our destiny?
Asteroids, the leftover debris from the solar system formation process, will search for answers to these questions and more about the history of the Sun and planets by investigating Bennu, the most accessible organic-rich asteroid from the early solar system. The mission will increase our understanding of asteroids, and it could shed new light on the origin of life on Earth.
